Architizer has become a staple of the architecture community since its launch in 2008, amassing hundreds of thousands of active visitors, over fifty thousand project portfolios, half a million images, and a defined editorial voice. A victim of its own success, Architizer was in serious need of a strategic design and technology overhaul.
Type/Code had the opportunity to migrate this wealth of fantastic content into a fresh database, and work from the ground up toward a refined information architecture, presentation of content, and re-thought community features— all on a shiny new technology stack.
Since there was such great imagery from the beginning of the process, Type/Code focused on designing a system that would do the image-heavy content justice in whatever context it is being showcased—from larger retina displays, down to smartphones.
There were multiple audience goals that needed to be considered with the Architizer redesign, from firms showcasing their work, to enthusiasts browsing and collecting inspiration, to brands and manufacturers highlighting how their products or materials are being used in great architecture.
Architizer needed to strike the right balance between an editorialized browsing experience and a deep, explorable database of projects and products. This meant trying to optimize the experience for someone skimming the latest featured projects and stories, but still supporting robust searching, filtering, sorting and collecting tools.
The response has been fantastic so far. Beyond consistent twitter love for the new image-friendly design, unique visitors and pageviews have increased by over fifty percent from the old platform, and total engagement time has quadrupled.
