Google reached out to us with two powerful goals: to let publishers easily optimize content for tablets and smartphones, and to pass a phenomenal experience along to a growing audience of users who are consuming more and more content on mobile devices.

Google Producer

The result was Google Currents and Google Currents Producer. The Producer side of things is a web application allowing publishers to leverage their already existing RSS feeds, YouTube channels and socials streams, and feed this content through customizable templates that work perfectly across the iPad, iPhone, Android Tablets and Android phones.

On the audience’s end of the equation is the Google Currents application for iOS and Android devices. With leading publishers pulling in over 4 million subscribers, Currents lets readers browse and download digital versions of their favorite publications for free, beautifully formatted for their tablets and smartphones.

With eight locations (and more on the way), family-owned Joe Coffee has been praised as one of the best coffee shops in New York by Food & Wine, The New York Times, Eater, and countless others. At the Type/Code studio, great coffee might be the one thing we consume more of than craft beer, so reimagining Joe’s online presence was right up our alley.

Extending the Joe Coffee experience onto the web centered around a fully responsive website, designed to efficiently inform visitors of shop details (who’s that cute barista?), additional offerings such as catering and classes, a brand new blog, and a full eCommerce shop selling beans, merch, and a well-curated selection of coffee brewing equipment.

About

While thinking about how the Joe Coffee site should behave on smartphones, one of the strongest user scenarios we focused on was helping visitors-on-the-go find the Joe closest to them, and using geolocation to jump right to that shop’s details.

The response thus far has be wonderful, with lots happy customer tweeting their love for the new site, and eCommerce sales far exceeding expectations.

Change by Us is a project that collects ideas for civic solutions, catalyzes project groups, and connects those groups to city and community resources. Using text messaging, a mobile website, and a full web application, New Yorkers can submit ideas and collectively work towards a more sustainable city.

Projects

Type/Code worked closely with the media design firm Local Projects and the City of New York to help evolve the project from its initial incarnation of Give a Minute, which had launched in Chicago, into a fully fledged platform for civic engagement. Change by us was presented by NYC Mayor Bloomberg as part of the PlanNYC initiative, and has now been launched in several cities throughout the country.

Type/Code was responsible for the concept, UX/UI design, frontend development, and localization for the global architecture firm’s new website, launched in early 2010.

After discussions with both current employees and third parties, a number of areas were identified in which their previous Flash-based website fell flat: it failed to express the voice of the firm, it did not highlight either the depth or aesthetic sensibilities of the firm’s work, it did not function well as a recruiting tool to either younger tech-savvy graduates or seasoned architects, it was counterintuitive to navigate, it failed to take advantage of current technologies, and it was so cumbersome for KPF’s marketing team to update that the content of the website had barely changed since the day it was launched.

Focusing on a clean, streamlined top-level navigation, the entire website can be accessed in a minimal number of clicks. Upon first arriving at the website, a striking full-frame photo or timelapse video greets the user, reinforcing KPF’s clean architectural design while enticing the visitor with examples of the firm’s best work.

Our passion for craft beer brewing inspired a data visualization that would help compare the flavors, aromas and bitterness of hops, so that we could design better beer recipes, and figure out what makes our favorite beers so great. After months of tweaking the design, adding new types of hops and updating the data, we finally did an offset run of 24” by 36” prints on Sundance 80lb felt finish paper.

What started as a dataviz exercise turned into our first physical product, and it’s own small business. Prints are being snatched up like crazy from our min-site hopschart.com by both home brewers and craft breweries all around the world. Prints are now available in home brew shops throughout the world.

We collaborated with design studio Kiss Me I’m Polish to create an exhibition website for the Museum of Modern Art’s retrospective on Willem de Kooning. To properly archive de Kooning’s work we needed to facilitate exploration across themes, periods and a dynamic timeline. We also needed to facilitate insight into his methods and materials.

The timeline view presented an interesting opportunity to map a large breadth of de Kooning’s work across both theme and time period through an interface that works seamlessly on both desktop browsers and tablets. Behind the scenes, Type/Code developed a powerful content management solution to allow MoMA’s curators to maintain full control over the site’s content.

Signpost is a leading online advertising startup that connects local businesses with new customers. They offer a simple solution to help small brick-and-mortar businesses manage their online advertising, while making it easier for mobile and online publishers to source relevant ad content from these local businesses.

Merchant Center - Dashboard

Type/Code worked closely with Signpost’s product team to completely redesign the Merchant Center where business owners create and manage their campaigns, track performance, and can leverage various self-promotion tools.

After helping to push out several core product improvements, Type/Code also redesigned Signpost’s marketing site, focusing on a content strategy that better communicated the service’s offerings across various customer groups, and giving the company's entire online presence an aesthetic consistency across their marketing materials and product interface.

Signpost’s merchant user base and online publisher partnerships both continue to grow, and with a solid series-A round of funding, Signpost’s revenue has been growing as well, by about 50% a month.

From re-thinking advisor’s work flows, to seamlessly integrating with existing tools, we have been working closely with inStream’s business development team to design and build the best web application that this industry has ever seen.

Through research, prototyping, and iterating, we have grown inStream from being just an idea, through multiple rounds of funding at rapidly growing valuations. But what we’re really excited about is all the happy advisors who are now providing better guidance to their clients, and now actually enjoy using the tools that help them excel.

Type/Code teamed up with legendary design firm Pentagram to help design and build a new website for the Edward P. Evans foundation. The Edward P. Evans Foundation has supported a variety of causes and made transformational gifts to such institutions and charities as Yale University Press, Yale University, Harvard Business School, the Warrenton Antiquarian Society, the National Sporting Library, Piedmont Environmental Council and various medical and equine charities.

The new website needed to be clean and content-focused, which left an opportunity to put some extra thought into interaction details and transitions, and making the entire site responsive so that it could adapt to a variety of screen sizes.

As public discourse surrounding journalism moves online, conversations scale rapidly. When a single article on the New York Times website inspires thousands of comments, it is impossible to reveal the collective voice contained within. We conceived and built VoxPop as a tool for abstracting online discourse, and visualizing sentiment through time and space.

VoxPop - Timeline

By siphoning reader comments from the New York Times API through a custom Natural Language Processing tool-chain, VoxPop classifies positively and negatively charged words, and then abstracts the underlying reader sentiment across hundreds of thousands of comments in popular topics of conversation.

At the Type/Code studio we love counting down to things, whether it’s lunchtime, beer time, or Groundhog Day. However, we couldn’t find a countdown tool that was both attractive and easy to share with friends. So over the course of a week, we spent evenings designing and building a light-weight web application to solve our frivolous problem. We dubbed it: itsAlmo.st.

It’s dead simple: just give your countdown a name and a time, and let it begin. Every countdown has its own spiffy URL for as long as it’s running (like itsAlmo.st/#BeerTime), so you can share it with friends and post it to Facebook or Twitter. If you're feeling fancy, you can even embed the countdown into your website or blog.

It's Almost beer 'o clock

The interwebs seemed to like it too, with traffic quickly jumping to over 50,000 pageviews a month, and countdowns spreading like wildfire through Facebook and Twitter. Notable participation has included ABC Family’s countdowns to show premiers, and acclaimed author Haruki Murakami counting down to his new novel hitting the shelves.

Lucas Sharp is one of our favorite typeface designers, and Carlos Pagan is one of our favorite art directors, so when they decided to join forces as a type foundry and design studio, we were honored to have the opportunity to design and build their website.

Pagan & Sharp

The website needed to showcase their work as elegantly as possible, from the full breadth of each type family through the photographed details of their physical creations. The Typefaces section expands and contracts to reveal a dynamic ‘waterfall’ of algorithmically set word samples of the perfect length, and allows visitors to toggle between styles and sizes. The work section strikes a similar balance between browsability, and providing as much real estate as possible for project images. Under the hood, the site is driven by custom content management system that provides full control over the curation of typefaces and design projects.

When the Zach Lieberman of YesYesNo asked us if we were interested in collaborating on a large-scale digital light installation for the London 2012 Olympics, of course we said “yes.”

Connecting Light culminated in a massive installation, with hundreds of six-foot weather balloons, filled with LED lights transmitting colors from one-to-another, creating a communication network spanning the entire United Kingdom.

Audience members were invited to participate by sending personalized messages along the light-lined wall at a number of viewing locations, or through a web site and companion mobile application.

Type/Code designed and developed the desktop and mobile website, message submission process, and visualization to accompany the physical installation of Connecting Light.

We teamed up with the branding and advertising agency Love and War to help re-imagine the online experience for one of New York's most legendary restaurants. P.J. Clarke’s holds a rich history, full of famous New York faces, and they have maintained their status as a classic N.Y. dining destination.

P.J. Clarke's new online presence needed to be clean and timeless, and tell their story while being functionally focused towards current customers. Type/Code built a custom content management system to allow menus, image galleries, and specific location details to be easily maintainable across P.J.’s six locations, allowing a rich set of content, coupled with a crisp design, to drive a compelling visitor experience.
